I make a rosemary soap w/finely-ground oatmeal. I use the "Easy Recipe" from BB's site. In my last couple batches I have noticed that my cured soap has an odd smell within it. The only way I can describe it is, to say it smells like a light urine/ammonia smell. I mostly notice it while using it. When it's dry it smells fine. At first I thought it may the scent of the laundry detergent I use, mixed with the rosemary scent. I've checked my oils and they are not expired. I realized that I have not been melting & thoroughly-mixing my palm oil, so I've been using it off the top. I would gladly welcome any advice if anyone has experienced this issue.

How old is your Rosemary essential oil and where did you buy it? When did you add the ground oatmeal and how old is it?
Do you live in a humid climate? Has the color of the soap changed any since you made it?

Thank you, Irena, for your reply - I bought the rosemary EO in July from BB. I usually add the oatmeal after I reach trace, with my EO. I keep ground oatmeal in a container and this container is maybe 6-mo old and was not expired when I ground it. I use 3-1/2 Tbsp ground oatmeal for a 5-lb batch of soap. I am not in a humid climate. My olive oil is from Sam's and does not expire until Nov. I'm kind of suspicious b/c I believe this issue started around the time I started using this large bottle of olive oil. I did smell the bottle of olive oil and it doesn't smell bad and is clear. Also, I usually mix the lye & oils at 95-100 degrees. Also, there is no color change, no DOS. The bars look great; nothing odd.
I truly appreciate your reply as I am trying not to get discouraged b/c I really enjoy making CP soap.

Olive oil is not normally clear. I would get yourself another bottle from somewhere else and see if that makes a difference.

Thank you for offering your feedback. I will try another bottle of olive oil.
