Hello! I am in Minnesota and am new to soap making. I just made my first batch! Yea! I was thinking of letting my soap cure in the closet off the kitchen so it isn't in the garage. My husband was wondering if the lye would give off fumes while it is curing. Any advice would be great.

I am trying to reign it in and not go crazy on the Brambleberry website since I am just beginning :D

Lye can give off some nasty fumes when it is mixing in with your water. Once it is soap though and is curing I don't notice it at all. If anything would be bothersome I think it would be the smell of the fragrances in the soap.

Welcome to the forum! And congrats on your first batch of soap!!!!

As for the lye fumes, what Bramble Momma said. By the time the soap is curing, most of the lye is not even there, it has combined with the oils to become soap. The only thing curing soap should give off is evaporating water.

The lye definitely gives off fumes on me when I combine it with the water. I can't see any fumes, but I know they're there because my throat gets irritated.

My soap is curing in the kitchen at this moment, so you shouldn't have a problem!

I know what you mean about BB! I just want to buy one of everything!!

Welcome!
Once the oils have interacted with the lye, there will be no lye present. Curing it in a closet is fine.
