I made my first batch of coldprocess soap. I made about 70 oz and split the soap into two--to make two separate batches. The first I used 0.8 fo of dirt and 0.2 of pomegranate fo and I used charcoal powder to color it. The second I used 0.45 oz of cedarwood and 0.35 oz of fir pine essential oils with indigo powder as a colorant. I used soapqueen's lots of lather recipe, but I ran it through the calculator again because I only had 9.6 oz of palm oil. Now 5 hours later (I had to check to see how it was doing. Apparently, I have no patience for this....for kids yes...soap to unmold....NO!) So when I checked on it now--it is pretty much a solid, but is has this excess of oil around it. Any clue why this could be? I thought it might be overheating so I took the towel off of it.

So the recipe is:

castor oil 1.85 oz
palm 9.6
coconut oil 13.15
olive 13.2

thank you for any help you can give me.

I don't think I used enough lye. Looking back at my notes I think I actually used 15.1 oz of coconut oil instead of 13.15. Which would account for the excess oil I think. Lye used was 5.6. Which works for the original recipe.

I think you may have just unmolded too soon. I typically leave mine alone for a full 24 hours, and longer if I use a silicone mold. Some recipes behave the way you describe, but given enough time, what seems to be excess oil is all absorbed and everything is fine. Let it be for a couple more days. All may be well yet!

I'm curious to see how this soap is now?

It looks like this. Check out the link. https://twitter.com/petting_the_cat/sta ... 2806634497 it was pretty hard and easy to cut. But it was still so oily. I had more coconut oil in the recipe than what I had entered into the lye calculator.

Added the rest of the lye and oils to make the batch like lots of lather and hot processed it. At almost 12 hrs later no excess oil and it's hard as it should be. It smells like the essential oils I used though--strongly.

How much more lye and oils did you add? Make sure to do a zap test in a few days.

1 oz more coconut, 6.4 of palm, 2.85 of olive and 1 of castor oil. I added 1.8 oz of lye with 2.1 oz water. I brought everything to the full 16 oz for the lots of lather recipe by soap queen. Except I just realized I added and extra 0.8 too much castor oil. But I can chalk that up to the superfat addition.

I reran the recipe through the soap calc and subtracted hat I already had and just added it to the soap I had cut up and put in to rebatch hot process.
