I understand that Superfatting leaves some oils for moisturising, and I understand that different oils have different SAP values, but....
If I have Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Palm Oil, and Cocoa butter
I assume it is the cocoa butter you need to remain in the soap to moisturise?
How does the lye determine which oil it leaves? Does it automatically use the lower SAP value soaps?
Sorry, but I am learning...and I have nobody else to ask....

Superfatting doesn't make soap moisturizing, it makes it less drying. The lye doesn't "choose" what to saponify, it reacts with everything it comes in contact with until it's used up. The only way to control what's left over after saponification is to pick an oil with some unsaponifiables - elements the lye won't turn into soap - but I use "control" loosely. I've read that if you make a batch of soap, then rebatch it with added oils, those oils will stay unsaponified, but I'm not sure how sound that is. Plus you risk DOS more the more unsaponified oils are in your bar.

Thanks so much!
Now I get it, some oils have a high percentage of unsaponifiables and others don't,
and the lye calculators can identify that when we use the superfat percentage, thank you!

Lye does not discriminate. There is no guarantee that any particular oil or butter will end up as your superfat. I add all my oils and butters right up front and let the lye take whatever it wants. Oils or butters with high unsaponifiables have a better chance of possibly ending up as part of your superfat, but you won't know which ones and by how much.
