Teach Soap

I tried my hand at salt soaps again last weekend. It was poured into a loaf mold and I tried to cut a slice off after 24 hours and it completely crumbled. I thought that perhaps it needed a couple of more days to cure so I tried to cut the rest on day 4 and it still crumbled. The recipe was 80% coconut oil, 15% olive oil, 5% shea butter, and 55% salt with 10% superfat. I used RealSalt, which is a pretty fine salt. What did I do wrong?

Salt soap needs to be cut asap. If you wait too long it will crumble. I cut mine within about 4 hours.

I usually cut my salt soap around 2-3 hours after pouring.

Oh wow, thanks so much for this important piece of information! I'll make it again this weekend and cut it sooner.

I keep an eye on the batch and keep feeling its consistency. Generally though, I cut mine in about 2 hours time. I usually use an 80% coconut/ 50% salt formula. I also use a higher superfat that 10%.
Experimenting and taking good notes is key in this business/hobby/craft, and it is all about the journey, so enjoy your journey and have fun trying your recipe again!
