As a scientist, I don't get why soapers don't buy sodium hydroxide in solution. I use sodium hydroxide every day at work. We rarely make it from a flake or pellet form. We buy it as a solution, usually 10N. It seems easier not too have to mix the "lye." Are there any recipes written according to grams and moles where water is not specified?

Sorry for the newbie questions, My artist brain and my scientist brain are clashing.

Water is heavier to ship. Also some people prefer different strength in their lye solution.

Cost and choice would be the reasons. Why pay to ship water? And Irena is right, you have more flexibility if you mix your own.

This soap calculator has an option for using a sodium hydroxide solution. I use crystals myself, but that is because I can buy them just down the road.
