Teach Soap

I made a batch of soap today and had 5 different colors for a swirl. Before I was through the blue, green and purple were at a very thick trace. The red and yellow were still very fluid. Same batter, just different colors. The red and yellow were micas. The green and purple were oxides and the blue was ultramarine. Has anyone else experienced this?

I've heard people say they've had that happen and it's usually with the darker colors, but I honestly think it's just from having to mix the darker colors more to get it all evenly colored.

I have heard that oxides may cause some Acc. (I'm pretty sure from the colorant video by Great Cake Soapworks)

It is the type of colorant, not the color itself that may influence trace time.

I know my clays will be slower to accelerate. I always thought this is because I pre-hydrate them with some water? But would you not have mixed your ultramarine in water as well?

I have had it happen as well, usually with my oxides however not always. I believe it's usually a combo of oxides/FO. I have also had it happen with some natural colorants.

I've had different colours of oxides, mica, and dyes cause acceleration at different levels. Each colour has a specific makeup, and sometimes its just right to cause some acceleration. For instance; I have 2 pinks that are nearly identical, same company, same ingredients. 1 accelerates trace almost to the point of seizing. The other doesn't affect trace at all.
