If I want to try different colors and scents and see their properties is it better to make a 2lb batch split it and try some of say a different scent and color in each in each....OR make seperate batches for each FO I want to try?? Goes that makes sense?? Hope so

I would make one batch, split it into different cups, add scent/color to each cup, then pour into individual molds. That way, you are sure that you are comparing apples to apples (including gelling and the like).

I did this with the 12 bar square silicone mold. Got some 8oz plastic containers, divided one batch by twelve, scented each one different and then watched and compared. Oh, I also kept notes. It was interesting and fun. There is a discussion about this on Ann Maries soap blog....which is where I got the idea.

Thanks for all the suggestion. Can't wait to experiment.

For little tester batches I've used small paper cups like you use in the bathroom and pipettes to add the fragrance to.

Does the individual soaps in the bar mold pick up fragrance from each other ?? What about next to each other during curing and storing??

I never thought of that - scent transferring. :? I have two curing racks - one in the laundry where the fresh soap goes so I can shut the door and keep nosy kids and cats out, then a second one out near my work area where they are moved after the 4-6 week mark. I noticed my laundry smells like a mix of everything, but the individual soaps still smell true to their scent.

I did not have any problems with scent transfer and I did 12 totally different. I used about 0.2oz of fragrance to about 4 oz of soap batter. I only colored one as the rest I wanted to see what color the FO might give me. The blog I followed from Ann Marie is called : Testing 1,2,3! and is from 1-6-11. I found that recipe to stay soft for very long so I will probably adjust that in the future... unless when I use one of these bars I fall in love with it? I took good notes and photos to be able to compare the colors. I am thinking I will do this every 6-12 months just to test out some new FO. For any soap maker that makes soap only for their family this would be a great way to get variety in the batch.
