Greetings folks,
Whilst waiting for the latest oils/lye delivery, I have been mentally planning the next few batches of soap (mostly variations on swirling techniques as picked up on the show-off-your-CP-creations thread). However, one thing I would really like to try is an attempt at creating a basic soap recipe which can be used as a base to assess the qualities/properties of a particular oil by only changing one part of the recipe.
For instance, I had a smallish sample of brazil nut oil and macadamia nut oil, and I used the following recipe :

base bit:
coconut - 30%
palm - 25%
olive - 25%
babassu - 10%

the remaining 10% being made up of whichever oil I wanted to assess, with the quantities run through a calc, obviously.
The thing is, Im not sure whether this particular recipe is a reasonable stab at what I want to achieve. Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Adam

Babasu has very similar properties to coconut. I can't help you on the palm as I don't use it. I would add some castor like around 2%.

Adam, I have used coconut and babassu oils in a recipe. My total for both of those oils was 29%. They are both similar in what they bring to a recipe. I did this one as a request of a friend and it was well received by all who tried this soap. I also loaded this one down with some butters, just in case the higher % of those two oils caused some dryness. I superfatted at 7%. Since that time I have repeated this recipe, see my snowflake soap in the show off your creations thread. I also will sub babassu oil for coconut in other recipes, using a soap calculator of course.

I used palm oil for a couple batches, I found those batches took a little longer to solidify enough to cut. I switched to lard however, as I found melting the palm each time and giving it a really good mix before using it was a little.. testy shall we say. I worried that I wasn't mixing it enough and would end up with a batch with way to much stearic acid. I find that the lard bars are a slight bit more firm than the palm bars too.

OK, thanks, I shall reformulate with no oils beyond the olive/palm/coconut plus the one to be 'tested'.

As a secondary question, what sort of percentage of an oil would you recommend be added to have a reasonable stab at assessing its' properties in a bar?
5% of total, 10%, 15% or higher/lower?

Cheers,
Adam

P.S. I havent got around to trying lard yet - maybe later, but it tends to get used for roasting potatoes rather than washing with :)

Adam,

I found this in my notes, I am sure it came from somewhere on this forum:

For formulating a recipe: use 35% soft oils
60% hard oils (olive oil is in this group even though it is a liquid oil)
5% butters

Now this is where you start and then you adjust from there. I have gone outside of these parameters and my friends will comment about this bar or that. Experimenting is great fun. Just be sure to keep good notes and look for feed back from the peoples using your soap. One thing that I have found to be the best is a longer cure time... say 2 months instead of one, but it is soooo
hard to wait. And I have not gotten good at making soap far enough ahead.... like my St Pats day soap... just got it made.
