Hi all,

Not long ago there was a post about sizing your batch for a specific mold. Well I should have marked it and didn't.

It went something like this but I don't have the correct numbers 8 X .4 14 X.4 3 X .4.

I tried searching under different wordings and sizing and pricing are getting mixed up somehow!

Any help would be appreciated.

Soapbuddy are you ok? Just missing you.

I'm ok. I have a laptop til my PC gets fixed. If you take your mold and go "width x length x height x 0.4" that should give you in ozs. how much the mold will hold. Now if you do a water discount, it might not fill the mold all the way to the top.

I have also filled a mold with water and then measured the amout of water it holds. I always like to have some extra... for my 'little' molds and imbeds. Not to mention that sometimes I will use the extra at a thicker trace to texture the tops of my loaf mold. If you are around when I soap you may see me make a mad dash for the basement to get 'just one more mold'!!!!!

Don't forget - when you find out how much a mold will hold, write it on the outside of the mold with a sharpie.

Good luck with the computer Irena! Glad to hear you are doing well. Thanks once again for the formula Irena!

hehhe I actually do write the ounces down with a Sharpie on my molds Dave, but it is a very good reminder. This mold is a new home made kine!

Suzie yes that works with smaller molds but the bigger the mold well the heavier that water gets! KWIM!!

Thanks everyone for the helping hand!

Yes she is a great mentor. So to be clear the number is 8 width times 11 length times 3 deep for this particular mold and that number times .4 equals the ounces your mold will hold. Yeah

So....if I am getting this right...I measured my molds(husband made them) and they are 3.5 x 3.5 x 12 so I multiply that by 0.4 to get 58.8 ounces which is a little over 3.5 lbs. Am I correct?

Just had to look this up once again and thought that some of the newer people might like to see this formula. It works! YEAH :D :D

Mold measures 15" x 2.25" x 3.25"

So here we go 15 X 2.25 X 3.25 X .4 equals 43.875 ounces

Oh the mold says it holds 64 ounces so where did I go wrong? Soap buddy did I do this wrong?

Hmm, I do my math a little differently. It is not precise but pretty dang close and been working really well for me so far.
Take the[ length x width x height ]that should be in inches. So you get inches cubed. Then you multiply that by .554112.
Why? Because 1 in³ = 0.554112 fl oz(US)
(that's why mine is close but not exact cause it equals out volume not mass. You can't take the volume and find the mass unless you know the density of your soap. It's also cause I round up to the nearest hundreth.)
15 x 2.25 x 3.25 = 109.69in³
109.69in³ = 60.78 fl oz
60.78 fl oz = 3.80 lbs
