I thought I would post pics for those of you that would like to see what soap looks like when it gels. The first pic is soap that has gelled almost all the way to the edges.

Image

The soap on the left is in full gel. The soap on the right is just starting to gel. See the darker middle?

Great to finally see this "gelling". I've been scared of it lol!

Great pictures. If you cover your soap, walk away and come back 12 or so hours later, how would you know if your soap had gelled or not?

My first day ever of cp soapmaking, I had no idea that the soap would gel. When I checked the cucumber soap, it was gelling, but I didn't know that and thought the lye had separated or something and freaked out. I immediately scooped it all into a pot, added a can of coconut milk, melted it down, and re-poured it. It wasn't until later that night I was reading and learned that the gelling was part of the normal process. Ha! Oh well, now I have coconut cucumber soap, which is nice too.

PS--I have two of that green mold. Love it!

Soapbuddy, why do you put soap in the freezer after it has reached full gel? To prevent overheating? (I have two batches from which I removed the insulation once they reached gel this morning, but have left them at room temp. I am wondering if I should move them or why I might want to.)

Great photos! I remember my first batch. I kept peeking and checking on it like it was a sleeping baby. I remember the shock when I saw what I later would learn was gelled soap. I figured I had messed up royally! Not so. Good photo for new soapers so there's no surprises!

Does every soap gel? I made a soap the other day and after about 30 minutes of cutting, the middle started to turn purple. It was really weird. I'm going to let it sit for the 6 weeks and see what happens. It's still really soft.

Thank you! That makes sense! I used the same recipe for two soaps and one gelled and the other didn't. The only difference was the FO. Thank you again!

Overheating can happen if you initially soap too hot, use milk (which has natural sugars) or some essential oils or fragrances. The soap can crack at the top to release heat or it can completely separate. Sometimes you are able to mix everything back in. Othertimes, it will stay separated and no matter what you do, the caustic liquid and the oils just will not come back together. In the last instance, I would trash it.
