Hello All,

I am doing a little research on this. I want to make a salt bar, thought it could be interesting and a nice additions to my collection. I am still trying to assess all the benefits of this little creation. I have dead sea salt which i notice will cause weeping so my second thought is can i use Epsom salts? They are great for the skin and it's actually recommended by some sources to soak in them up to 3 times per week.

Has anyone made a salt bar with Epsom salts or anything besides table salt? How do these (salt bars in general) bars feel on the skin? Do they still bubble? What salt to oils ratio would you recommend? One recipe recommended a 1:1 ratio but i thought it might make a really rough bar? Anything else that may be helpful?

Any thoughts, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Erin

Regular table salt works the best for a salt bar. Epsom salt or sea salt will weep. I would add up to 70% table salt for each lb. of raw soap. It will not scratch, since it's water soluble. It creates more of a lotiony lather.

I have a recipe that is wonderful and it yields a magnificent salt bar!!! I was able to sell one on Etsy, just one because I always want to see how things go first, and the reaction that I get!! he lady loved it, although she said it smelled like Irish Spring at first which is weird because I used BB's "Kentish Rain"!! Anyway, the recipe is below and I must say that everyone that has used one of my salt bars is wowed at the fact that it seems to feel more smooth than a regular bar of soap. Soap Buddy is absolutely right, table salt works best and I promise you will love your finished bars when they are ready to go!!! Tweak it however you want it of course!!

Salt Bar Recipe

Makes about 35 ounces

12 oz Coconut Oil
3 oz Olive Oil
2.4 oz Lye
5 oz of distilled water
15 oz salt

Add colorant and FO or EO during whisking or stirring and at light to medium trace, pour in the salt, then pour in the mold. Do not insulate, wait about 45 minutes and remove from mold and cut.

I just tried this recipe but 'forgot' to add scent. Now it smells weird but I'm definately looking forward to trying it out. I wish I could travel a wee bit forward in time and then back again just to see how it wil turn out.

Float?! I have a batch that will be done curing next Friday. I scented with grass and matcha tea. For this one I did a 1:1 salt:oil ratio. Even though I have not used it yet I think I would decrease the salt by alittle. Now I can hardly wait to see if mine will float

I just did a ph test completely out of curiosity and it said the soap was perfectly safe to use. But I made it only yesterday. Do you think it's safe to use? Maybe there are some bits in the middle that aren't ready yet.

I made a batch of salt bars following the recipe that was given earlier in this post, I also followed the suggestion to place in a 190 oven for 2 hours. I just pulled them out of the oven and am curious if it's normal that they are still kind of soft. At this point there is no way that I could unmold them. I'm letting them cool for a bit (not too long). Mainly I just want to know if it's normal that they are soft straight out of the oven.

I used equal parts salt/oil. It all worked out it just needed to cool down for about 35 minutes. It's already cut and ready to cure!
