If I have time I always prefer to not gel. I love the smooth feeling of a soap that isn't gelled and the colours are more stable. Usually I stick mine in the fridge. When I'm in a hurry for soap I tend to put my mold in the oven for a few hours and then take it out and let it cool.

Thanks soap buddy and soap chick!

So if you CP a soap and put it on the table and wrap a towel around it and un- wrap it in the morning it is a gelled soap.

If you CP a soap and put it in the refrigerator as soon as you molded it, this is called CP refrigerator soap and/or ungelled soap.

If you CP a soap and mold it and then put it in a 180 degree oven for 1 hour this is gelled soap to the third power or oven/gelled soap?

Am i missing anything here? Does someone see my confusion? I hope not! I'm trying really hard!

You are pretty much right on. Insulated = gelled Fridge = ungelled Oven = CPOP (cold process oven process) (forces gel)

I'm a big gel fan but it doesn't matter to the final product too much. I like the slightly more translucent look that gelling causes and find that I get less soda ash when I gel my soap. Plus since Otion and BB's soap labs are both upstairs with no air conditioning, in the summer months, it's impossible NOT to gel! =)

I'm a big gel fan too. I gel everything but milk soaps. I can't tell any difference in the texture of the finished soaps.

I split a salt bar batch - gelled one using the oven, left one uncovered on the counter overnight. The color and texture was very different, and still is after 6 months. The ungelled one is grainier looking, rock hard, and kept the pale yellow of the colorant. The gelled one is smoother, softer, and lost the yellow color. Maybe the fact that it is a salt bar made a difference.

I prefer the ungelled look of milk soaps, and I also like the CPOP method, although sometimes the soap has overheated. I'm still figuring out which technique works best for different recipes/formulas.

Oh, and let's not forget the partial gel experience! That's when the soap ends up with a gelled center and ungelled outer edge. Sometimes it looks kinda cool.

Would you sell a bar that was part gelled and part not. I mean with the dark center it doesn't look pretty does it? I would think people wouldn't want to purchase such a soap, or perhaps they would. It looks like unbaked cake to me, or maybe I'm thinking of something else.
