My first batch of cp soap of course had to go bad. I got to a light trace fairly quickly with the stick blender and stopped when the trails were sitting on top. then split into two and added my colorants, added the FO at 1.5% and it got lumpy. tried to mix but it didn't seem to help so I poured it in the mold anyway. I assume this is ricing and of course went back to bb and fresh bamboo isn't the best FO to use apparently. What are the lumps, is it just asthetic and can I still use the soap?

thanks in advance
you live and you learn even though if rather do it right the first time :)

Some fragrance can make your soap seize or rice. To be on the safe side, I would rebatch to make sure there are no lye pockets.

it's only for me, is it totally obvious if there are lye pockets when I cut the soap? I assume so...

I poured the soap last night into a small 1lb silicone mold. There were small lumps but not too many. I put a box over top of it (not sure why) ...this morning it looked ok, took the box off to peek and this afternoon there are now dark specs on the surface. is this a cosmetic thing? it looked perfectly fine 10 hours ago. did the box on top increase the humidity and make it mold? or are these my lumps of Fo?

I don't totally get this concern about covering and insulating soap especially when some suggest keeping it cool, guess it's a personal preference or maybe depends on the type of mold ...

here are the two photos

is it ricing? what is the rice? is it small pieces of accelerated trace?

and second photo is the oily specs I swear wasn't there this morning when I left for work

thanks

It's hard to tell from the photo if it's ricing. With ricing, the batter looks like a lot of bits of rice in your batter.

BB's Fresh bamboo does accelerate trace, so if the lumps were bigger than grains of rice, it was probably the batter accelerating.

For your finished soap, it's not mold. It could be the FO seeping out if it didn't get fully mixed in. Or it could be the lye coming out.

Did you touch the oil spots? If not, if you touch it you'll be able to find out if it's the FO or not.

Hi Genny,

It was little curdled bits maybe smaller than rice. Just little lumps..

I also touched the soap I don't feel any difference it feels like a cupcake right now. the dots are darker but there isn't a change in texture

I would check for zap. Dampen your finger. Touch that finger to the dark spots, then touch that to your tongue. Does it zap? Either way, IMO I would rebatch. It could be straight fragrance, which could be irritating to your skin. It could be lye, in which case your soap could burn you.

I sometimes get little drops of oil on my soaps' surfaces (like your picture #2). Mine are either; fragrance seeping out, which generally re-absorbs [the tends to happen with certain fragrances, but I've not found a commonality with them.. yet!]; or glycerin drops which I get when I mix my colourants with glycerin, I don't always get them, but they certainly aren't uncommon. These will also re-absorb after a day or two.
