Teach Soap

I'm looking to make some square candles but don't want to put a lot of money out on metal molds just yet. I was wondering if anyone had used 1L milk or cream containers? I think they'll work but I'm wondering if they'll lose their shape? I was wondering if I might need to wrap the outside in foil or something so they don't bow out?

I haven't used them for candles, but I do use them once in a while when I make CP soap and they do tend to loose "square" when filled.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

They will bow out. I would wait til you're able to get proper supplies. Wrapping the milk container with foil won't help much.

I was just trying to avoid putting the money out on the molds when it's not guaranteed that I'll be using them more than once, thanks for the advice though Anyone have any ideas of what might work to help them hold their shape?

The problem with your method is as soon as you get a candle mold, you might need a different wick and you might not get the same burn pool. It does get expensive either way you look at it. Anytime you change the diameter of the mold, add color or a different fragrance, you will need to test all over again.

I have used milk containers for soap and yes they did bow out on me. So I put flat wood scraps around the container and held them in place with a bungee cord. It was massive overkill - but it worked! Don't forget to put your mold on a tray or something so that if it leaks you don't have hot wax running everywhere.

Another idea for a less expensive way to play with candles is to try making candles in containers, or sand candles. I just watched a fun video on making those. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asCRkcXSivc
