Teach Soap

Thanks for having such a great group and am very excited to be here. I am very new to soap making and haven't as yet made my first batch. Have been learning and reading as much as I can but I haven't read anywhere about using old oil in soaps. So this is my first question. I have old oil from a deep fryer available to me(I usually give it away to a man for fuel conversion). and was wondering if it is possible to use this oil in soap making once it has been filtered.
Appreciate your guidance and advice. I have already purchased some oils but thought if I could use this as well I should. Again thanks in advance. HUgs Liz

Hi and welcome! I would say used oil is not a good idea. Chance of bacteria and what not would be too great even if it has been filtered. JMO. Don't know what others would think of this.

Used oil is oxidized. Making a soap batch with used oil will make your soap prone to rancidity and DOS. I wouldn't do it. I use the best ingredients that I can find. I am proud of the ingredients that I use and want the best for my customers.

One thing you can do is save (in the freezer) the uncooked fat trimmings from pork and beef and render it to make lard and tallow. They both are wonderful in soap!
