Okey dokey....

I have a good recipe for a basic lotion that I make several times a month with no problems. I usually use a combination of Olive Oil, Apricot Kernal, and Mango Butter.

I recently had an order for a custom bottle made with Vitamin E and Cocoa Butter added. So as not to throw off my percentages, I swapped the mango for the cocoa, and cut down the olive oil to add in my Vit E. I've swapped butters/oils before without a problem, but this time I had two trial batches go funky on me.

Both ended up with a nasty, mealy film on the top and the whole consistency was thrown off. I have a feeling it is the vit E that did it, but is this normal???

At this point I've lost supplies and money from the two failed batches, but I am headstrong and can't stand when things done work - so I want to try, again.

That's so strange! I've never had that kind of reaction with vitamin e. Were you using the same batch of e-wax?

Yup. Everything is identical. I made a regular batch the same day and it came out just fine.

I'm not sure. I think I am just going to scrap the E. I can't afford to lose anymore materials trying to incorporate it.

Did you switch preservatives or anything? I notice that Phenonip breaks up my emulsions much worse than Germaben II does.

I might go up to 5% e-wax if it were me or just scrap the E like you were suggesting. If that doesn't solve it though, pop back in and let us have a crack at the recipe again.

If you don't mind me asking what was the brand of vit e oil? Is it in an oil base? Most vitamin oils are really the vitamine added to a carrier oil to streach out the receipie and to cut the costs. Thanks I hope you can figure it out.

It was the vit E oil from BB. It also might have been the cocoa butter for all I know. I did use two different butters from two different places, but who knows....
