Hi, Peggi! I tried this recipe from Anne-Marie's blog which was pretty good. It can be found here . I also like this other recipe from the FNWL blog .
For the first sugar scrub recipe I like to substitute jojoba beads like Anne-Marie suggests, using different colors to "match" the fragrance I use and because they're more moisturizing and less abrasive than fruit seeds.
For the second brown sugar recipe, I use any dark brown sugar I can find in the grocery store. :)

P.S. For the second brown sugar recipe I use FCO or sweet almond oil instead of the hazelnut oil because that's what I have on hand.

The easiest scrub to make is a simple mixture of oil and salt or sugar. Downside is that it's a drippy mess that leaves an oil slick in the tub and on you.

Next easiest is to use what is called Shealoe Butter or Shea Aloe Cream, depending on the supplier you get it from. It's a proprietary blend of aloe, shea butter, emulsifier, and preservative. Southern Soapers has some scrub recipes on the blog ...

My favorite type of scrub is what's called an emulsified scrub. It's actually a self-emulsifying scrub because the emulsifying action (blending of oil and water) occurs during use on wet skin. Ellen's Essentials has a recipe that's a good starting point for this type of scrub

You can experiment with this recipe to find what you like. Change the butter and/or oils, change the amounts of the ingredients, etc to come up with a consistency and feel you like.

Have fun!

Carol

My sugar scrub comes out very similar to Fresh's Brown Sugar Body Polish.
I use Raw Sugar, since brown sugar (at least here in Argentina) has molasses and dyes the Polish too dark brown. Depending on the humidity of the day, I might have to add a pinch more sugar.
I calculated approx. US measures, but I'm not sure they are correct. The metric measures are correct:
200 grs Raw Sugar (7 oz.)
20 cc Jojoba Oil (4tsp.)
10cc Wheat Germ Oil (2 tsp.)
10cc Sweet Almond Oil (2 tsp.)
10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
10 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil

The Lemon and Grapefruit Essential Oils are great to fight cellulite!

Hi, Peggi! Wow, Carol is a GREAT resource. I looked at that emulsifying scrub she suggested and it looks interesting - I'm going to try it when my BB stuff gets in. :)

Thank you, Carol! And welcome to the forum! :)

Peggi, I just wanted to let you know that by using the combination of oils and butters as suggested by Emmy Gabriel of FNWL in her recipe, I found that the resulting sugar scrub isn't a gloppy mess but more scoopable from the jar especially if you have it sitting around for a couple of days.

What I was thinking of trying when my BB stuff gets in (where is that UPS guy anyway? :? ), was to substitute some of BB's foaming bath butter for a small amount of the shea/cocoa butter called for in these recipes, that way I get a foaming sugar scrub. I don't know if that would be something you would want to try or not, but thought I would share this idea with you anyway. As for substituting with evening primrose oil, I would want it in something like a lotion or cream to leave on my skin where it would be most effective? Rice bran oil I'm not too familiar with, I have some too that came as part of a sampler and don't know what to do with it. Good luck with your sugar scrubs! Happy Soaping! :)

Question for Celeste: don't citrus EOs cause increased photosensitivity after use? Especially since it's summer, I would be worried about using these in a scrub, because you're basically removing a layer of skin, unless you put a warning on the package label not to have any sun exposure immediately after use because of photosensitivity? I have sensitive skin and eventhough I love citrus-based/scented skin products, I have to avoid them like the plague during hot weather because I break out into a rash even when I'm in the shade if I use any.
