Hi There, Im looking for clarification on whether or not soap can be called "natural soap" if it includes some fragrance ( Not the essential oil kind but ones from BB) and if it is colored with mica.

I should add, all other ingredients are classified as natural.

I personally believe that soap can never be 100% natural because of the lye, but taking that out of consideration I wouldn't consider soap with mica and FOs "natural soap" but every one has different opinions on what natural is in soap because some micas are made to be nature identical but in labs

This is my dilemma lol. My gut says it isn't however Ive seen some classified as natural. So, Being a brand new soaper Im afraid to even say it to my family who will use it if it's not! Thanks

Fragrance oils are not natural. Neither are the colourings used on the micas. Neither is lye.
Not sure what you mean when you say that the other ingredients are "classified as natural" There IS NO legal definition of natural.
The word "natural" has absolutely no meaning on a label.
People use it whenever and however they want.
You can use it or not, depending on your personal internal bullsh*t meter :wink:

That being said...I use the word natural if I use only the oils and fats, essential oils for scent, and a colorant such as tumeric, annato or clay.

But I have wondered: if you make your own lye, can you call your soap 100% natural then?

Technically yes Olivia. The problem with making your own lye from ashes is that you won't know the strength of the lye. One time your soap might come out fine. the next time your soap could be lye heavy. This is not something that I would sell. too much of a liability issue. My grandmother made soap this way, but it was only used for laundry or washing dishes.

I am a hobbyist who very occassionally sells, but I label my soaps "all natural" when I use no synthetic colors or fragrance.
