Is all lime essential oil considered phototoxic? On another group someone mentioned that the process of distillation (whether cold press or steam distilled) made a difference in how it effected the skin. I've not heard that, so wanted to check and see.

Oils that contain furanocoumarin can cause phototoxicity. Folded citrus eo's have less of the furanocoumarin in it because they've been further distilled, which removes some of it.

Steam distilled still contains furanocoumarin in enough amounts to make it phototoxic, so look for folded lime eo instead.

It gives recommended amounts for use in lip balm, but I'm hesitant due to what I've heard about lime.
Thoughts?

I would use folded citrus oils as well. I tend to err on the side of caution.

I have taken a few classes on essential oils through Aromahead Institute and I was taught that unless it is folded to not use in leave on products whether steamed distilled or cold pressed and to still err on the side of caution when it's folded.

So the regular lime EO is still alright for things like soap and shampoo, right? Since it washes off?

Yeah, citrus essential oils are fine as long as they're in a wash off product. You could use them in a leave in product but then you would have to stay out of the sun for at least 12 hours. So maybe if you were making something for yourself but never in a leave on product you would intend on selling.

Badger lip balms use a lot of citrus: tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, orange all turned up on a quick search. And those are EOs. Maybe concentration makes a difference--less than 1%?
