Teach Soap

Has anyone made oil lamps out of mason jars? I found a site called Put It In A Jar with all kinds of amazing projects. I am thinking about making some citronella lamps out of mason jars for my back porch but kind of worried about the danger of the glass breaking, although the wick goes through the metal cap. Anyone ever used these kind of lamps or heard of any problems with them?

I've heard of them cracking, but I have never personally seen it.

I made one to see how it works. I used a fiberglass wick. The tutorial said for indoors or outdoors, but I used citronella lamp oil in mine and it burns black smoke like a tiki torch. I'm not sure I would want it too close to me but I haven't had a good evening to try it out, it's been raining. I wanted some nice decorative oil lamps for my out door tables for the summer. The tutorial said you can also use virgin olive oil, which might burn cleaner, I don't know, but I hate the thought of a good soap making oil just getting burned away, lol.
