Teach Soap

It finally happened: my five year old daughter caught the bug, and wants to soap with me. Of course, CP is out, but I figured she and I could do some melt and pour together--after all, we cook together, and she understands how to handle hot pots and pans.

So, since BB was closed for the holidays, I bought one of those kits from a local craft store. I knew the quality wouldn't be as good, but she's on school break NOW and we needed to start somewhere. So we made a few bars, including a log of clear soap with an embed. She has run around gifting her soap to friends. Now she wants to do another project, and we chose this project from .

I'm a melt and pour novice, although I've watched a few videos. I think a lot is in the timing and temp... Wish us luck!

Good to hear she is following in your footsteps. I still remember that photo of her in the bee keepers outfit! I made soap with my grand-dtr last year. She was 5 as well. It was a great project and we both enjoyed it very much. We used calendula petals in it and I was able to use the soapmaking as encouragement for gardening and herbal teaching. I only wish she lived a little closer to me? Maybe someday???
So I am wondering at what age would be OK to teach CP soapmaking. I know it would be somewhat dependant on the childs attention span and ability to follow instructions, but I am thinking maybe 14 or 15??? My dtr loves my soaps but shows no interest in learning, so I am thinking one of my grandchildren may be my best bet.

I'm glad to hear you're soaping!

My five year old already helps in the beeyard, and I'm looking forward to the day she can really help with my business. I think if a teen or pre-teen is responsible, understands that lye is a dangerous substance, and can follow directions, they can soap!

A very Happy, although belated, Birthday to Rosie99!

As long as the teenager is highly responsible AND there is an experienced person assisting/guiding while they learn, then I think it is okay. I think it is very dependent on the individual.

True enough! I'm happy to say our first project turned out well, and we're planning a second one. I think it's going to involve a pink heart embedded in white soap, but we'll see!
