Teach Soap

I know some members of this forum are full business people. Some are hobbyists. Some learned that Dove soap is crap. At one point in time we have or might in the future think about turning our passion/hobby/escape from reality into a hopefully profitable business. Between the cost of supplies, materials, business licenses and expenses it can add up and be pretty overwhelming.

I found this out just a few minutes ago. Reality sucks. But maybe we can all make harsh reality a little less like getting lye burns on the face and more like a accidentally ruining an okay pair of jeans level of stress. So to any and all soapers I and others ask...

What is a healthy amount of money to start up a soap and soap related product business? Between licenses materials tools etc. exact numbers aren't necessary. Just what you needed to get started (or what you wish you had)!

For supplies, molds, containers, labels, maybe a better printer, tablecloths and displays for fairs, etc? $3-$5k. If you're handy, you can do it for a lot less by making your molds from scrap wood, etc.

That's my best guess. My business also involves beekeeping, so some of my expenses are bee-related, and I'd have to break those out.

I probably spent about $3K all together, and that includes the 10-12 months of testing CP recipes to get my basic soap recipe nailed down. Also includes insurance, lab testing fees for lotions, business cards, website, etc.

I think I read on another of your posts that you might be moving to FL? If so, they have a very strict rules about what you can make from your home to sell - only soap. Everything else needs a manufacturer's license, product registration, a separate facility to make your products and more. So, your start up costs will likely be more if that's where you'll be living.
