I knit too and I would take back anything I gave that got an "I guess" after it! How utterly rude and insensitive! I have had it happen for sure, but I have learned to say things like, "well, it took me a lot of time, money and talent to make that, so, since you don't seem too thrilled with it, I will be glad to take it off your hands and give it to someone who it will be more suited for. After all, you shouldn't be saddled with something that you don't particularly care for!" Sooooo, if you need someone to give your alpaca hooded scarf to, I'm available and I would LOVE it!
I firmly believe that people shouldn't lie if they don't care for something, but there is no reason to be rude about it either. I'd rather have my daughter in laws say something like "wow, this is quite lovely, but it just isn't me" (and they have) than allow me to think they love something and I keep giving that particular type of thing for years only to find they hated it all along!
