I read today (on another soap company's website) that adding Borax to CP soap will make it harder. Is this true? If so, what are the negatives/drawbacks of doing this?

Borax works better for liquid soap. I don't see how borax would make the soap harder. It is used as an additive to shredded CP soap to make laundry soap. Adding salt or sodium lactate to a CP batch will make the soap harder, but you should have a good recipe to start out with. :)

Thanks, Irena....that's what I thought. I have a recipe that I'm satisfied with (and hubby likes too----bonus!) and just recently purchase sodium lactate for the first time. I've used it in one batch, but didn't really notice a difference. May up it a bit....I started with just 1%.

You're welcome. I use SL in just about every batch. I don't go above 2% as anything higher than that can make my soap crumbly.

Where can you find sodium lactate? Is it readily available in stores or only on-line?

I ordered mine from BB. I am on the schedule to give it a test run tomorrow.

I've only found it online. BrambleBerry carries the liquid. If you want to make your own solution, the lotioncrafter carries the powder.
