Poured my first CP soap yesterday! I used the Rooto lye from Ace and it worked just fine. I used olive, palm, coconut and castor, with shea butter and vanilla vanilla. Even though I knew the scent was going to turn it darker brown, it was still surprising to watch it. I can't wait to make more :D

I am scared of lye, but I am so tempted to try CP! I am an oil painter by trade, so the artisan look really calls to me.

Miss Bramble, you are indeed the queen of soap making! Your information is amazing, I am so grateful for all the resources!

IF I try this, my mold has a 3 pounds capacity. How can I change the measurements for only a batch of 3 pounds? Thanks,

You can convert any recipe through a lye calculator for the size of batch that you like or need.

I have been watching lots of videos on soap making. I am not relying on what just people say on the video, unless is someone that is very reputable. However I do have a question about lye safety.

I see many people have gloves when they mix their lye solution, but then takes them off. I see others having gloves on during the entire process. Unless is for sanitary reasons, I imagine if I am doing HP I can take my gloves off to mix color and fragrance?

Also I prefer latex gloves. I did buy a pair of rubber gloves, but I feel clumsy with them. I feel I have more control with latex gloves. Any comment on that?

Thank you all.

I use nitrile gloves as I'm allergic to latex (and shea butter). They stay on from the moment I get my pitcher ready for water, weighing my lye and mixing lye water and oils. For HP, I take them off once the raw soap batter is in the crockpot cooking. Rubber gloves are too thick and clumsy.

I also wear a disposable respirator to weigh the lye and mix the lye. Once the lye water has cooled off I take the disposable respirator off. I wear safety glasses during the whole process along with an apron and closed toe shoes.

I also use nitrile gloves and keep them on from the time I measure my lye until the time I've cleaned up after making soap. I wear safety glasses the entire time, too.
