Hi. I am very confused as to the temperature at which to soap. I have read anything from 80, 90, 100, 110, 115, etc. Is there something that determines the temp? Is it the oils used? Personal preference? Something else?

Thanks for your help! I have been lurking here for awhile, but this is my first post. Obviously I am a newbie!!

I'm sure some of it is personal preference. I soap at around 110 degrees.

it's a combination of things. personal preference, ingredients, fragrances, whether you intend to gel the batch, etc.

as one example, floral fragrances or spicy fragrances tend to heat up quickly, and can cause your soap to solidify so fast that you can't pour it into the mold. (we call that a seize, along with a lot of bad words.) if you soap a bit on the cool side, it can make those scents a lot more docile.

ingredients such as honey or milk can cause overheating, too - starting cool is a safeguard. or if you don't want to gel a batch, start cooler.

on the other side of the coin - i was making a batch this morning with a scent i know very well, that behaves perfectly, and i was in a hurry to get the soap poured and get on to the next task, so i soaped hotter than usual. presto, speedy soap!

Hi Mel, about gel. (Sorry about that) I also had never heard of gel, and when I posted the question on the forum, I was directed to this previous thread.

I found it very informative and helpful, just like everything else here. Happy soaping

Ditto what Soapbuddy said. I soap with beeswax also and to get it melted I take it to about 150 then watch and wait until it comes back down. I usually go between 115 and 120. Never had a problem (at least so far). I don't always use a stick blender. I like using a wire whisk and stirring by hand. The mix is usually cooling to about 100 by the time it's tracing enough for me to add my fragrances. I pour and pop it into a warm (warm being the operative word here.....not hot) oven. This forces gel. I'm unmolding and hitting the racks within about 2 hours after pouring. But this is just the way I do things. Neither right, nor wrong.

Don't know what happened there Mel. I've recopied the whole post (it was from soapbuddy), so hopefully it will work this time.

Here is a thread on it from earlier this year. HTH.

I've tried a few different temperatures and my preference is usually between 80 to 100 degrees.
