Hi! I'm new to the forum and have a question about using charcoal (or "vegetable charcoal"?) as an additive in my CP recipe.

I've seen this on ingredient lists for some other soaps (I think Origins might make one) and it sounds kind of cool. Has anyone tried this? Can anyone tell me what the supposed benefits of charcoal are? Or where you can get it? Or what "vegetable charcoal" is??

Thank you! :)
Ashleigh

Charcoal can be drying in large amounts. It seems to work for people that have very oily skin.
I tend to use it for the color since it doesn't bleed.
I'm not sure, but maybe the vegetable charcoal is bamboo?

I use it in acne bars that I make with orange-bergamot eo's and it's been reported to me that it's very effective. I purchased it online and ground it with a mortar/pestal. 1 tps added at trace does the trick. It can overly dry your skin if it's used too much. Twice a day for acne-prone skin cleared it up very well.

Great! Thanks for the additional info.

Can you tell me any more about the kind of charcoal you have used? Activated charcoal (which is used medically, I think), or "vine charcoal" (or "willow charcoal"), which is used in drawing? I found both of these online. I don't want to put in the wrong kind!

Also, SuperSoaper, did you use 1 tsp. per 4 lb. batch?

Thanks again for the help! Charcoal with orange-bergamot EO sounds lovely! I was also thinking of pairing it with some dried seaweed (another additive I've never tried---but would like to). :)

I use 1 tps per pound of oils....and even that is a lot. I would use 2 to 2.5 tps PPO in a 3 pound batch. Be careful with using the bergamot. It's a photosynthesizer and reacts pretty drastically with a lot of sunlight. I do 2.5/1 orange/bergamot mix.

Activated charcoal is on my soaping to-do list. However I have not seen it carried by the major suppliers I've used.

Where do you folks buy yours?

I've just started experimenting with activated charcoal too. I sourced mine from our local home brew store as it is used for filtering. I did need to grind it down further to a powder (using a coffee grinder). The website on the bag is www.stillspirits.com.

I recall reading that it is used for medical purposes to aid when someone is poisoned as it has great absorption qualities.

I’ve only experimented with activated charcoal in one batch so far and didn’t use enough. The resulting colour was a slate grey blue.
