I made a pumpkin-scented soap yesterday, and when I look at it in the mold today, it appears to be leaking oil. The soap has a shiny, translucent look to it, which seems to be due to the oil on it. I touched it and tongue-tested it, but all I got was a soapy taste, no zap. Thus, I don't think there's a lye issue. The super-fat was 7%. However, I used oxides to color the batch, and I mixed the oxides with some coconut oil before adding them to the soap. So the super-fat is actually more than 7%. I poured the soap at a thinner trace because I wanted to try a swirl. Could it have separated? It seems pretty solid in the mold, gradually getting harder, just oily.

Will the soap stop the oil-leaking, and is it okay to use?

Thanks all!

Sometimes soaps will sweat oil a bit. Leave it alone, and it might re-absorb. If not, just blot the excess oil off. It could be caused by your FO, by a water discount, by the thinner trace, or the phase of the moon. :)

Give it some time. There's a good chance it will absorb back in.

Thanks so much dixiedragon and soapbuddy! I un-molded and cut the soap today. It is not as oily as I first thought. Ya'll are right, I think it will be fine after it cures a while.

I was going for a white swirl in orange. When I poured the soap, it seemed a little thin to me, so I didn't swirl it too much for fear the colors would blend together. As it turns out, the exact opposite happened. There is a layer of white on the bottom of the soap, with only a tiny bit of swirl throughout the bar! Also that little bit of swirl is clear instead of white, and I was surprised that it could be that clear. It looks like M&P. But I'm hoping it will turn white after the soap cures, maybe?

Oh, well! I never know what I'm going to get until I cut the bars!

Thanks again! This forum is so helpful, you guys are the best! :D

Sounds like your soap will be just fine. Give it a nice long cure of 4-6 weeks.
