Been reading of some variations in which order the milks are used in the soap making process and am now confused. One way is to simply do a milk/lye solution and then add that to the oils. The other stated to put the milk in with the oils and then blend in the lye solution which was made with distilled water. Which is better and what's the difference?

I don't think one way is "better" - more like which way works for you.

My preference is canned milk. If a recipe calls for 10 oz of water, then I dissolve the lye in 5 oz of water. When my oils and lye have cooled to about 100F, I add 5 ounces of canned milk to the oils, then I add my lye water. This works for me and makes milk soap that does not smell like baby vomit.

I agree with dixiedragon that it's personal preference. Try several different ways and decide which is best for you. I like using powdered milk mixed into my oils. :D

Ok thanks so much for the reply. The more I read the more confused I get sometimes :)

I used minimum water required to dissolve the lye, then add the rest of the liquid as room temp milk as soon as the oils and lye are mixed.

So Irena, and others who add unfrozen liquid milk..you don't get the scorching and or discoloring etc that I have heard many times about in milk soaps when you add the lye solution? I froze my milk the one and only time I made a batch of it..{which was a few yrs back and I haven't attempted it again because of the smell I got in the cured bars}

I don't get scorching and only very mild discoloration from the milk. My soap goes in the fridge or the freezer to help prevent gel.

Hmm..I put mine in the fridge as well iirc....Is there a difference in the types of milks maybe? I don't think I used GM..just regular whole cows milk from the grocer...my soap turned out fine in all aspects except for that awful smell only when the dry bar was touched..If I can figure it out Ill be making many many milk soaps....Im going to try it again using your method and the powdered method as well.

Thanks so much!

Like Irena, I use minimum water needed to dissolve lye. I use cow's milk for the rest of my water content. I let my lye, oils and cow's milk all sit until they are room temp-"ish". I add the milk to my oils and stick blend so its really incorporated. Then I add the lye and blend as needed. Yes - my batches have an ammonia smell at first - but it definitely dissipates after the cure.

Jstar - that's weird! The bars only smelled when you touched them?

@Lilysmom..thanks Im going to give it another go for sure. And mine didn't have an ammonia smell..it was like one of my grandkids did a major spit up job on me lol..I would've preferred the ammonia :lol:

@dixiedragon..Yes..I have never had a soap do something like that..weirdest thing I ever saw. I could pick it up and smell of it, smelled pretty good...took it in the shower with me, bathed with it..everything smelled wonderful...but before I got it wet, the smell was only on my hands..I could even put it down on the counter and smell it without touching it and there was just the good smells...

I thought it may be just 'that' bar had been possessed....so I went back and did a check on each bar with just one finger..did the same thing...

Wasn't about to try selling that evil smelling thing, so I used them myself :lol:
