Does anyone find soaps that incorporate clays are drying? I made a lovely facial bar and in half of the batch I incorporated red morocan clay. I LOVE this bar but I find that if I don't moisturize afterward my skin does become quite tight and therefore I question if it would be appropriate for a person with dry skin.

Does anyone else find this to be true? Or does it differ based on what type of clay is used?

Thanks everyone!

Red clay is the most drying. Try Kaolin clay. It's more gentle and not as drying.

Using too much clay in soap or on the skin too often can be drying. That being said, some clays are better than others for certain skin types. If you do have naturally dry skin you will want to stay away from using clay masks more than 1-2 times a week and limit your soap usage depending upon what type of clay is in the soap, how much is in it, and how dry your skin is. If you have dry skin stay away from a masks or other products made with red kaolin, French green, or bentonite in them, to name only a few ingredients that are very bad for dry skin.

For dry skin, stick to using pink, yellow, or white kaolin clay. You can also use Dead sea clay since it usually works well for most skin types in general. White kaolin helps to stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it. It does not draw oils from the skin, so it can also be used on dry skin types without negative results. The gentlest of the clays, French white clay powder is cleansing, soothing and softening. It is less absorbent than other clays, making white clay suitable for normal as well as sensitive skins. White kaolin clay is the mildest of all clays and is suitable to add to products created for people with sensitive skin too.

Also remember that moisturizing is part of a complete beauty routine and should not be a step that you skip. :)
