I'm just curious. When I told my 81 year old grandfather that I was making soap, he told me that his mother used to make it with pork tallow (Or tahller as he says  ) when he was a kid. They'd butcher a pig, render the fat, and then use it make soap outside in a big pot.

I'm wondering how that kind of soap might have turned out for them.

That's the way soap used to be made. :) Not many bubbles, but it will make decent soap.

And I bet she did not scent it! Or color it....

My mom used herbs and infusions, but I don't think that was standard at that time.

I doubt my greatgrandmother did anything extra to it. A lot of what they did was out of necessity. They made their own soap out of their own pork tallow because it was less wasteful and stretched their money. I don't really see my great grandma putting anything else into it because "who cares" if it's colored or smells different. That would have been her mentality.

I think I might make some straight pork tallow soap just for my grandpa and my great aunts. Just a small batch, I think they'll get a kick out of it. I'm pretty sure the soap making stopped with my great grandma in our family. And she probably even stopped doing it when my grandpa was still a young man.

I've done it. It makes a nice soap. Hard bar, very gentle and mild. Not very bubbly.

I've done a 100% lard (pork tallow) bar before, LOVE it! Super gentle, but it could use a shot of castor to help with the lather!
