Teach Soap

I've been looking at the fragrance oil recommended usage on some of my oils. They all say at least .5-.75 oz per pound of oils. Over the last two years I have used 1/8-1/4 oz per pound and never had issues with fading and my soaps come out with a long lasting and beautiful fragrance. Long lasting as in 6-8months later the scent is still strong and a year later still. Is it just me, am I missing something or is the IFR recommendation an obscene amount of fragrance oil?

The preferable amount of fragrance, within the guidelines, is highly subjective. Some people have a super sense of smell (like super tasters) and find less scent more enjoyable. What you think of as perfect may be too subtle for someone else. Or it may be a bit too strong. The guidelines are meant to ensure safe use of the scent so you shouldn't use more but can use less. It sounds like you've found the right amount for you!

An IFR rate is the MAX safe amount to use. Most vendors post the amount they feel will give you a good scent. Nothing says you need to use the max safe amount or even teh recommended by vendor amount. Use what you like UP to the max amount!

Use what works for you, just make sure you don't go above the IFRA recommended guidelines. So if you use less and it's strong enough for you, go for it!

I made a batch of soap with Balsam and Cedar from NG and used the maximum 5%....my entire basement smells like it, and has for about the last 6 weeks. Luckily I like the scent but next time I make that I'll be sure to back it down...way down. Live and learn.
