Anyone have any tips on where the best info is on making liquid soap?

I tried a recipe from the book The Soapmaker's Companion by Susan Miller Cavitch, following the instructions, and it seemed wrong from the start. She has you heating up oil and water together on the stove top. I had crackling and popping oil/water mix exploding. It was scary! My husband kept checking in on me to make sure I wasn't getting burned. At the end of everything, I ended up with what should have been liquid soap, but was a separated oily mess.

I am not going to ask what went wrong with this method, as it just didn't feel right to me from the start and I do not plan to try it this way again. I am wondering what you all use as a guide to learning how to make liquid soap. Any suggestions would be great - thanks!

Awesome! I think I will buy the ebook later this evening! Thanks! I don't know how I didn't find it on the BB website earlier. Man, I love this.

Let me rephrase that. Gently heat up the oils. Add potassium hydroxide to your room temp water, which should make it heat up on its own. Then combine the two. Potassium hydroxide makes this crinkling noise when you add it to water and that's ok. Makes sure you are wearing safety gear, eye goggles and gloves.

PS You add the lye water TO your oils.

Soapbuddy, should I have added the heated up water to the oils, or the oils to the water?

I should have known better than to try heating them up together!
