Ok I found a nice easy and easy on your skin soap to make for my first time makeing soap , (hopefully this weekend) .

A solid soap, measured in grams superfatted by 8%

Oil(s) Selected Amount %
Coconut Oil (76 Degrees) 162.50g 25.00%
Olive Oil 487.50g 75.00%
8% Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) Amount 86.710g
Grams of liquid recommended 214.50g
Yields 951.21g
Current Batch (total oil weight): 650.00g

I know mostly olive oil soaps need to cure longer , do they need to sit longer in the mold or is 24 hours long enough.
Im makeing this becuase of mine and my sons sensitive skin.
THanks

Hi,

That's a lot of olive oil, but its certainly possible. In my experience, castille (olive oil) soap does need to stay in the mold a little longer than most soap recipes. If it were me, I would leave it in the mold for 48 hours and then feel it to see if it's hardened adequately. I'm assuming you are using a loaf mold (?).

And, yes, I've found that my olive oil soaps need to dry longer than 4 weeks...especially since you have a fairly high superfat %.

That's my two cents. Good luck!

This is called Bastille soap and it will take about 4 months to adequately cure. It can be used before then, but will be a much better bar if you wait. The softer the bar, the quicker it is used too.
As fro unmolding, a lot depends upon your weather (humidity and such), your mold, etc. But generally speaking you will need to wait 2-4 days for high olive oil soaps. Just check it each day and you will be able to tell when it is hard enough to remove without tearing it up. Be sure to wear gloves though, just in case. Remember too, it will take longer to trace than a different recipe so keep at it and make sure that you achieve a full trace. Much luck, and be prepared to become addicted! Lol

That is nearly identical to the 70/30 olive/coconut recipe I started with and still come back to. When you get more experience, you can lower your water amount, which will give you a stronger lye solution (which is why you want some experience before you do it) but the reduced water will mean a shorter cure time.

Don't let the long cure time discourage you - it can seem like they will never get hard, but once you pass that 8 week mark they harden noticeably. Once you get going you'll have lots of soap on hand and the longer wait won't seem so difficult.

For a harder soap, you can try Ann-Marie's beginner CP recipe, an even split between Olive oil (33.33%) Palm oil (33.33%) and Coconut oil (33.33%). As a bonus - its EASY TO REMEMBER!

It will give me an exscuse to keep makeing batches of soap cuase I wont be able to use my castile soaps for awhile
I have been playing around with recipies I have found on the internet and running them thru calcs I think this one sounds good for a basic non castile to try while IM waiting th MONTHS for the first one to cure

A solid soap, measured in grams superfatted by 8%

Oil(s) Selected Amount %
Castor Oil 22.68g 5.00%
Coconut Oil (76 Degrees) 113.40g 25.00%
Olive Oil 136.08g 30.00%
Palm Oil 158.76g 35.00%
Shea Butter (Unrefined) 22.68g 5.00%
8% Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) Amount 61.865g
Grams of liquid recommended 149.69g
Yields 665.14g

If I did it wrong let me know. Shows it should me a cleansing , fairly hard but condtioning bar of soap and I am gonna order Dragons blood FO and Possibly chocolate esspreso FO , I know they probly discolor so I wont have to try my hand at coloring till later. AM I missing anything? I have to wait for my order to come in on some of these oils so I wont be able to make the soap till they do , Im gonna guess next friday or so . Im so excited I wish time would go buy faster. I dont know how many hours of soap makeing videos I have watched but its probly a bit excessive

I like the revised recipe better, too. You should still have a nice bubbly lather and the extra olive oil will be very conditioning. Good luck!

I guess I don't understand the skeptical feedback on olive oil soaps. I made my second batch of Cp soap this week. On this recipe I used 75% rosemary infused olive oil with 25% coconut oil and a chilled mint tea for the lye water. The soap came out beautifully. Did I just get lucky?

Bubble up, the way I read it, it wasn't the olive oil that the author of the new recipe was objecting to, it was the coconut oil.

The rest of the comments were more to do with the length of time it takes to get a Castille batch to trace. Once can wear out their stick blender and/or arm if they aren't cautious! And when making a Castille or a Bastille soap, especially when new to soaping, it is very easy to mold with a false trace.

I got everything I need to make the castile soap today except the thermometer. I coudnt find one and I dont have the extra money to pay for one and shipping as well so I am debating on trying my first small batch without it Im pretty good and guessing temps by touch enough to tell if the oils and lye solution are within 10-15 degrees of each other. But I spent 3 hours running errands and becuase of my chronic ilness this may mean Ill be flat out for the next few days but maybe I will get lucky. I miss the days when I could go out and work or whatever all day long and still have enough ommph to do things when I get home now Im lucky if I can stand up after doing as much as I did today. 36 is to young to be this broken. Ok im done with my whineing I can think of all the pretty soaps I can make while I recoup my strength :)
