OK, I'm managing to confuse myself about the various forms of coconut oil, their properties, usage, pros and cons, so can someone please sort me out? Exactly what are the differences between:

76 degree coconut oil

92 degree coconut oil

fractionated coconut oil - exactly what IS 'fractionated' anyway?!

Yes, I'm having an old lady blonde moment. Or should that be gray moment? :lol:

When it comes to soapmaking, you can use either 76 or 92 degree coconut. I prefer the 92 as I live in the desert and it has a higher melt point.
Fractionated coconut is a room temp. liquid that has had the stearines removed. It would make your soap very soft if you subbed it for regular coconut oil.

I always wondered what fractionated coconut oil was!

I use the 76 degree coconut oil for soaping, b/c it's a bit cheaper.

Thanks Irena! I've been thinking of trying the 92-degree coconut because my regular 76-degree oil has been liquefied for months. Even in my well-air-conditioned home. What makes the melt point higher?

What IS fractionated coconut oil used for? Lotions, I guess, where you don't want the consistency to change?

Does anyone know the difference in how 76-degree and 92-degree coconut oils are made? Different species of fruit, pressed from the fruit differently, processed differently...?
