Hello everyone, this is my first post!

I am going to start making soap and I was thinking about using a very simple recipe for 100% coconut oil with a 20% superfat on that. I hear that it's very easy to make and was wondering if anyone has tried this one before and if they've had any problems with the mix.

Another recipe I've read about is to use used Vegetable Oil from the fryer to reuse as soap as was wondering if anyone has done this and if there is a superfat on this one or any other ingredients added into this. I have heard of people successfully making wonderful soap with used cooking oils but am not sure if the recipe is 100% cooking oil and if it is, what should the lye ratio be here?

The other thing is that I have bought a cold process, soap - making kit and they've included a whisk. I guess this should be fine?

Thanks!!!!

I've done 100% coconut oil recipes regularly, for my skin though I have to use at least a 30% superfat. But my skin dries out easily. With that much coconut oil, the soap does harden fairly quickly so keep that in mind if you're using any scents that accelerate trace.

As far as the used oil thing. I do know that some people make soap out of used oil just fine. It does have to be cleaned, you can find some videos on Youtube that show how do to that. I don't know if that's the only oil they use in the soap, I would assume not since high heat and repeated heating damages & breaks down the monounsaturated fat in oils and it's the monounsaturated fat that increases an oils shelf-life/stability.

A whisk is okay, but if you plan on making a lot of soap, a stick blender is even better.

With a 30% superfat are you getting a bar that is too soft, though? How would it compare to say, a store bought soap like Dove?

With 30% SF it's not soft at all once it starts curing. I've never used Dove, so I have no idea how soft/hard that is. We grew up on Ivory which is hard as a rock and I feel that the hardness of the 100% coconut oil soaps, even with 30% SF, are very comparable to Ivory.

Vegetable oil from the fryer has already oxidized due to heat. Soap made from it is more likely to get DOS from the oxidized oils. IMO I would never make soap with it to sell. I want the best for my customers. run any recipe/oil through the lye calc and superfat. Without superfatting, that soap will be very harsh and drying, unless you use the soap for laundry. I have made 100% coconut oil soap with a 20% superfat and it's fine. This is the only exception, as all my other soaps have 20% or less of coconut oil.
