Teach Soap

Everyone must be busy getting ready for Christmas because there are not many postings.

The worst DOS I got were on a batch with no color and no fragrance. I get them on soap that is months old. Lay people don't even notice them but I do. Does anyone see a relationship between DOS and color and fragrance or lack of it or gel versus ungel? Would the addition of a preservative help? What is a preservative?

The only batch I ever got DOS on was a batch that I did not use distilled water..... I don't know if that means the water was my problem, but it's the only experience I've had with it.

That being said, I am curious how your colors are doing lately?

Preservative won't help on soap.
It would get eaten up by the lye. Try an antioxidant like ROE. With that said, I got DOS with pure Castile.

Ha ha. You remembered! I am doing much better. I got away from lab colors unless I wanted a bar that was one pale color. I have been using some clays, pink brazilian, and some ultramarines and pigments. I got as real good blue and black swirl scented with Kentish Rain that I called Storm.
I have also continued to work with my silicone mold and I think I have the hang of that.

Not one single DOS with my castille and it is over a year old.

I got DOS on a 2 year old bar. I suspect only because it was exposed to NJ humidity.

The only times I ever get dos are with castille or fragrance free bars.

What is DOS...other than the precursor to windows...I'm sure I will say d-oh, when I am told.

DOS happens from oxidized oils, or so I've been told. It smells bad and the spots look yellowish to orange. I've only had that happen with pure, unscented castile.

I get DOS on bars left in the upstairs shower. It only gets used a few times a year, but I get the moisture in the air from bathing my dog and being in NJ get to the soaps. They get orange nasty smelling spots. Especially the essential oil bars!
