Teach Soap

I have made four batches of soap, each one getting more involved, always the same lard recipe, which I like but I wanted to try something different so I made my own. I studied different properties of oil, ran it through calculators, checked for how hard it would be, lather etc, finally made it. Darn thing traced so fast I couldn't hardly add color and get it in the mold. I thought huh, not making that again and tossed the recipe. So, now it has set only a week and a half, I grabbed a bar and went to the sink, I LOVE IT! has so much lather, I was really pleased, and I don't have the recipe.... LOL silly me!

That is not fun when that happens. I did the same thing in my early soaping days. That's when I learned the importance of taking notes when soaping.

I got a 3 ring binder to keep my recipes in. I've kept the recipe for everything I've ever made, and after I use it I go back and make notes on the paper so I know what I liked/didn't like about it. It's been pretty helpful, and now I have it sorted into sections for recipes I re-use a lot.

I always write mine down - sometimes you want to know what not to do again!

Good point on the what NOT to do. I have been taking notes, just wish I had not tossed that recipe... I can probably get close, and I think I will start the binder idea, that would come in very handy.

I second keeping the notes. At first, I didn't do this until I wanted to go back and compare something I'd done with a more recent batch. Couldn't do that because my memory is worth squat these days... So now I take notes but still haven't organized them so I have a mess of steno-pad-sized papers with things scribbled on them. I really need to get a binder going so I can find things months later when I need them again.

3 ring binders are great! I have 2 completely filled and am working on my third, which only has notes on batches that didn't turn out correctly for one reason or other.
