Teach Soap

I am new with this, so I've gone a bit overboard on all of the "right" equipment. Tonight though, I am noticing a significant difference between the accuracy of Taylor submersible probe thermometers and my Amazon BAFX Made in China infrared thermometer. There's 8-10 degrees difference between them! I'm not sure which one to believe but the infrared seems to be measuring temperatures right for surfaces around my home and the interior of the refrigerator and freezer. Has anyone else noticed this difference? Does it matter that much?

Are your thermometers able to be calibrated?

There should be an adjustment thing right under it that you can turn with a wrench, or plyers,

I used the icewater method.

The surface of a liquid is in contact with air. That's most likely why you are getting a different reading. I prefer a laser thermometer since it doesn't touch anything and I don't have to wash it.

Wow, ladies, thank you for your feedback. To follow up, I did try to reset my Taylor digital thermometers with the probe. Using the ice water method, one is reading 52 degrees and the other is showing a whopping 83 degrees. Then my husband and I put the probes in our mouth and came out with 105 and 135 degrees. So, I think I will be returning these to Amazon and just using the infrared thermometer which measures the same cup of water around 32 degrees.

This has really been an unexpected and interesting experience.
